When I first heard about Laura Vikmanis’ book It’s Not About the Pom-Poms, there was a single quote that echoed again and again through my brain: “Do one thing every day that scares you,” Eleanor Roosevelt’s famous line. Laura embodies that challenge.
Laura Vikmanis is the NFL’s oldest cheerleader…ever. At 40 years old she made a radical decision that changed her life forever. She left a marriage that had been troubled for years, and for the first time since becoming a stay-at-home mom in the late ’90s, she was able to ask herself: What do I want to do? While participating in a pole-dancing fitness class, she was approached by a woman who used to be a professional cheerleader and who encourages her to try out.
So she did. She tried out for the Cincinnati Bengals squad next to girls young enough to be her daughters. Girls with tighter abs, fuller hair, no kids and no crow’s feet. After much adversity and multiple auditions, she finally made the team, becoming the oldest cheerleader in the League.
You may not become a professional cheerleader, or break any records, but it’s never too late to try something new. Laura shows us that the possibilities are endless.
