Spiritual Doesn’t Have To Be Serious

It’s time to put the ‘light’ back in enLIGHTenment!

Eating only clean food, doing yoga and meditating every day, walking a straight-and-narrow spiritual path … it can all be a bit much, especially when we take ourselves too seriously. JP Sears has set out to change all that. He invites us to laugh and let go of all the should’s and the don’ts that can sometimes make conscious living feel a little heavy.

JP’s YouTube channel, AwakenWithJP, has received tens of millions of views, as he pokes fun at everything from essential oils to veganism to yoga selfies to having a spiritual guru.

Here’s JP (in character, as His Englightenedness) teaching us how to be ULTRA spiritual:

In his forthcoming book, How to Be Ultra Spiritual: 12 1/2 Steps to Spiritual Superiority, JP Sears explains that the New Age has become the Old Age, which is why he’s ushering in the Newer Age, blinding us with the dawn-like brilliance that is Ultra Spirituality.

The secrets of Ultra Spirituality? Practice competitive yoga and merciless meditation. Eat only gluten-free/organic/vegan everything. Get good at out-humbling those around you. Make sure that everyone knows how superior your spirituality is when compared to theirs. (Of course, it’s all tongue-in-cheek, and JP’s satire is actually meant to move us away from these things.)

He takes aim at the ‘sacred cow’ of modern spirituality, so that we can experience something that’s more genuine and less ego-driven … and more full of laughter! Conscious living doesn’t have to be so serious.

What do you think? Do you welcome this silly break from all the earnestness? Or is spirituality something we shouldn’t satirize? Leave us your thoughts in a comment.
