6 Ways to Brighten Up Your Look This Winter

Winter can leave you feeling blah. Fight the winter doldrums with some quick, easy tips for freshening up your look. We’ve gathered creative ideas that you can try right now, from bright colored tights to dramatic eye shadow. It’s all stuff you probably have in your closet already, it’s just a matter of trying something new. Put some bling in your winter!

Brighten Those Baby Blues (or Browns)!

Swap out your black eyeliner for a deep blue or green, or try bringing in some purple-toned eyeshadows instead of grays and browns. Pair with a more neutral lipstick (like Tory Burch’s “Son of a Gun.”) Watch the compliments come rolling in.

Simple Hair Switch!

You don’t have to commit to a completely new do; just try parting your hair on the other side, or down the middle. You’ll be surprised at how much more body you can get.

Bring on the Bling!

In small doses, some shiny, sparkling clothing or accessories can really jazz up your look. Try visiting a vintage store that sells earrings from the 50s. You’ll find lots of rhinestones, crystal, colored mosaics, and glass. Another fun option: find a sweater with blinged out buttons. J. Crew tends to stock all kinds of sophisticated, but sassy styles.

Tighten Up!

Use funky, colorful, patterned tights to add life to a black or grey ensemble. You’ll still look classy, but far more playful.

Red Alert!

It’s hard to beat the instant dramatizing effect of red lipstick. Try on several before you settle (some reds have more orange tones, some more purple; find the one that best compliments your complexion. For me, it’s Mac’s “Charismatic.”) If you think a saucy red mouth is too much, scale back on other elements of your make-up.

Oil It!

There are so many great-smelling oils on the market now that triple as a scent, a hair de-frizzer and a skin rejuvenator. I’m a huge fan of “Caudalie’s Divine Oil” and “Fresh’s Seaberry Moisturizing Fresh Oil.” Neither breaks me out or makes me too oily. Just a few dabs will do you.
