Goodbye Beauty Regimens, Hello Beauty Rituals

Beauty Rituals: Dawn’s Story

Dawn Gallagher loved her summers in the country. Being one of eight kids, she never lacked for entertainment. Summer meant leaving the city behind, which was a relief, and part of every summer was spent at her grandmother’s.

Dawn’s grandmother was a beautiful Italian woman who would wrap her up in hugs and kisses when she came with her brothers and sisters. She also loved caring for her beauty, and the rituals that went with it. She held that if something came from the earth, it was meant to be used. Dawn learned how to make facial masks from bananas or avocados, yogurt and honey.

Grandma would say, “Everything you need for beauty can be found in the earth, your cupboard, or your refrigerator.”
Ritual Practice: Tahitian Mask

The mask we recommend takes its ingredients from the cupboard and the refrigerator, just as Dawn’s grandmother advised. Women have been using such masks for centuries to brighten dull, lifeless skin.

Have fun with this by putting on some soothing music, lighting a candle, and perfuming the room with incense. Set your intent to look and feel beautiful. Then follow the recipe and the guidelines that follow.

Tahitian Mask (for normal or oily skin)

Ylang Ylang is indigenous to the Maya Archipelago. Dawn noticed the women of Tahiti mixing ylang ylang with their coconut oil, and using it as an all-over body rub and in their hair.

• 1 tsp of Wheateena brand cereal
• 1 tsp of crushed oatmeal
• 1 teaspoon of honey
• ½ cup of plain yogurt
• 1 drop of geranium oil
• 1 drop of ylang ylang oil

Warm the honey and add to the oats, yogurt and Wheateena. Add in the drops of essential oils and make a thick paste. Apply the mask to your face, then lie back and leave it on for 10-20 minutes.

Ritual Practice: Dawn’s Moisturizing Ritual

Ritual should enhance your life, and there’s every reason why your rituals can be fun. Why not enjoy making yourself beautiful by turning the process into a ritual?

In her worldwide travels to fashion shoots, Dawn learned about a moisturizer that can be used following your application of the Tahitian mask.

Pampering Rose Moisturizer

• 2 tsp of jojoba oil*
• 3 tsp of sweet almond oil*
• 3 drops of rose essential oil*
• 1 to 2 drops of jasmine or lavender essential oil*

Mix the jojoba oil and sweet almond oil together as a base. Combine the essential oils together, and then add to the base oil. You can experiment with your own favorite essential oil(s) depending on your skin type. Remember just a few drops goes a long way. Smooth the moisturizing oil all over your face, neck and shoulders. Make sure your hands are clean.
