It’s officially that time of year where days disappear into darkness faster than you can blink, cold temperatures hover, skin goes ashy and you feel like you need something to exfoliate your entire soul, let alone your complexion. You might not be able to control the weather, but you can control the space you are in and find new ways to generate some internal heat and maybe incinerate a few calories at the same time!

The Class by Taryn Toomey
New York • Greenwich, CT • Los Angeles • Vancouver
This workout will make you want to scream and it’s not just because of the squats, hip bridges, deep core and leg work on repeat and continuous plyo jumps. The chill zone of The Class comes from a mixture of a gut-wrenching sweat session combined with affirmations to confront your biggest challenges both in the workout studio and outside of it. Instructors encourage you to scream, pant, laugh, and even cry through your workout. The result is a release tapping into tribal instincts which might sound cheesy but leaves you feeling emotionally and physically powerful.
Down Dog Yoga
The feels at Down Dog Yoga are always welcoming and warm. There’s a reason for that. Temperatures in the hot yoga studio are usually set in the mid 90’s. The studio offers a range of power flow classes that will make you sweat so hard you might forget it is winter. For newcomers, they promise a blend of sweat, strength and spirituality. Ironically (or maybe not so ironically), you’ll get just that right in the heart of the nation’s capital. Down Dog’s Yin practice is a personal favorite under the names “Power Restore” and “Power Down.” It’s 60 minutes of warm stretching which gives you the sensation of sinking comfortably into your joints. Try it on a Sunday evening for the perfect reset to start your week off right.
M N D F L
Winter can knock off your seasonal equilibrium, especially when it comes to your mood. If you haven’t done it before, try exploring guided meditation to set your mind right. M N D F L is one of many studios emerging throughout the country and globe encouraging you to “book a cushion” and learn about different types of meditation. Special courses help you relax with sound therapy, promote sleep, find calm through controlling your breath, set intentions, or even improve posture and everyday movement.
Playlist Yoga with Nicole Sciacca
Sometimes finding the ultimate motivator of chill with calorie burning results can boil down to a single instructor. I stumbled into one of Nicole Sciacca’s yoga classes a year ago. I’ve been hooked ever since. Yes, Playlist brings new meaning to the term “fine-tuning.” It’s a mix of fresh music hits balanced with zen on the yoga mat. It’s often the attitude of the teacher that helps you to engage your thoughts and your body. Sciacca’s approach is a flow which focuses on athletic and emotional strength. In the middle of a pose where you have options to keep things basic or advanced her rusty voice will ease in asking “Do you always have to do the most difficult thing?… And if you are, why?” It’s a question in a fitness space that doubles as one in real-life. The most fulfilling classes are those where you might walk in feeling heavy but leave feeling stronger and renewed.
If you can’t make it to these classes, hop online and try to find something like it in your area or find out how you might be able to stream workouts or plan a retreat with some of these pros!
