Now that The Office is over and The Mindy Project is in reruns for the season, I’m feeling Mindy Kaling withdrawal. I love the writer/actress’ excessive chattiness, unapologetic appetite for food and pop culture, and spot-on comedic timing. She’s just plain adorable, and I’d love to hang out with her. The conversation wouldn’t drag, that’s for sure.
Since she hasn’t invited me over to give my opinion on how to renovate her new Hollywood Hills house yet, I found a way to get my Mindy fix in the meantime. She’s just released a deck of 50 conversation-starter cards called Questions I Ask When I Want to Talk About Myself. Based on her book Is Everyone Hanging Out With Me? (and Other Concerns), each card details an anecdote from her life — like how she shopped for prom dresses at Caché— or her thoughts on things like the rights and responsibilities of best friends or instructions for her funeral.
Each card ends with a few questions ranging from sort-of-serious (What would your 13-year-old self think of your life now? Did you ever have a crush on a teacher or camp counselor?) to delightfully frivolous (How much manscaping is too much? Do you think leopard has developed a certain sophistication over the years, or is it still reminiscent of Carmela Sorprano?). The answers to these questions will not solve an existential crisis or change the world — they’ll just get you laughing with friends, which is its own special kind of bliss.
So, go to it! Slip the deck into your beach bag or bring a few cards to your next happy hour, and it’ll be like adding a new friend to the mix. Just don’t let her do all the talking.
