Have you ever listened to the voice-overs during prescription drug commercials? “Side effects may include blurry vision, nausea, facial flushing, accelerated heart rate, death…” I don’t know about you, but the idea of taking a drug to cure one problem while at the same time potentially creating a whole other problem seems ridiculous to me. There must be another solution!
About ten years ago, I started pursuing alternative therapies because I wanted to learn how to take care of my body as a whole, not treat the individual symptoms I experienced.
Like most people who practice alternative medicine my acupuncturist, Rachel, was a big believer in holistic healing. She suggested I keep a diary to record what I ate and drank, how I slept, emotions I felt, pain I experienced, etc. She made recommendations for changing my diet and suggested exercises I could do to alleviate some of the pain I was experiencing. But, most importantly, she encouraged me to meditate between sessions and suggested imagery to help focus my meditations on healing the symptoms I hoped to be rid of.
During one of our earlier sessions, as she began to needle me, I randomly recalled the vivid, colorful and extremely weird dream I had had the night before. I proceeded to tell her the basic themes of the dream, but she wanted to know everything about the dream–the colors, my emotions, my reactions, etc. I told Rachel about the prominence of the color yellow in the dream, how I swallowed a raw egg, given to me by a pastor at what seemed like Communion and the resulting regurgitation of the egg and all sorts of black sludge. This was no ordinary dream for me and I was a little freaked out about it, especially since, in the telling of it I could still feel the sensation of all that stuff coming out of me. Rachel proclaimed I was cured and gave me a huge hug, emphasizing that through my meditating and imagery, I was helping my body heal itself.
I hope to learn more about meditating, natural healing and the power of acupuncture as I continue on my journey to holistic health. I’ll keep you posted! Have you had any experiences like mine? Tell me!
