Most people these days don’t believe in magic elixirs. I mean, how crazy is it to expect a drink to do much, right? But it’s not really that crazy. After all, we often expect pills to help alleviate our pain and allergies, stop or even reverse hair loss, aid in calming our nerves and putting us to sleep, and much, much more, so why not a drink? And juices can be better than taking pills, especially supplements, because getting our vitamins, nutrients, and minerals from a whole food means our bodies are going to process and absorb everything more efficiently, so the benefits of juicing will be greater.

The key is to juice the right combinations of vegetables and fruits to give us the perfect combination of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to ease a particular health issue. Take menstrual symptoms for instance. They can run the gamut from cramps and acne to headaches and insomnia, so below are some of the most common symptoms and some super-simple and super-tasty ways to alleviate them.

Acne is a common symptom of menstruation, but eating your fruits and veggies can help—especially your greens. The dark, leafy greens in juice like kale and spinach, are excellent at detoxifying, as is wheatgrass, which is a skin powerhouse. As well as removing impurities that contribute to acne from your body—which means consuming it can help you break out less and give you a beautiful glow—it also contains natural phytochemicals, which are antioxidants that help slow down the aging process.

Juicing Recipe for Acne: Go Green Drink

Handful of parsley or wheatgrass
1 Granny Smith apple, cut into wedges
2 kale leaves
Handful of spinach
4 celery ribs

Juice the parsley, followed by the apple, kale, spinach, and celery.


A headache can stop your day pretty quickly, but instead of popping a pill, try this juice packed with folic acid and vitamin B, both of which have been shown to reduce even migraine-level headaches. It’s also been found that low levels of magnesium and potassium can contribute to headaches, and this juice has plenty of both to keep your levels healthy.

Juicing Recipe for Headaches: Femme Fatale

1 small fennel
1 apple, cut into wedges
4 celery ribs

Cut the fennel into narrow wedges and feed it into the juicer followed by the apple and celery.


If you’ve ever dealt with insomnia, you know just how frustrating it can be to lie in bed, wishing you were enjoying a restful night and feeling like you’re fighting with your brain to do so. This juice has a one-two punch of potassium and vitamin C, which work together beautifully to aid sleep—vitamin C lowers your cortisol levels, and potassium is a natural relaxant.

Juicing Recipe for Insomnia: Potassium Punch

1 peach, pitted and sliced
2 oranges, peeled
1/2 papaya, seeded and sliced
1 banana, peeled

Juice the peach, followed by one of the oranges, the papaya, and the second orange. Pour into a blender, add the banana, and liquefy.


Cramps are pretty much the gold standard in menstrual symptoms, so this one is a super-easy recipe to keep in your back pocket for any friend complaining of cramps. A double-blind study showed that women who were given ginger capsules had a decrease in menstrual cramp pain. And pineapple is chock-full of bromelain, which is an anti-inflammatory and eases muscle cramping. Be forewarned though: bromelain does also help prevent blood clots, which means if you start drinking three of these a day during your period, you could increase your flow. So stick to one when the cramps get too bad.

Juicing Recipe for Cramps: Pineapple-Ginger Ale

1-inch slice of ginger
1/2 pineapple with skin, sliced

Juice the ginger, then the pineapple.

Menstrual Blood Loss

A heavy period can mean you have emergency tampons stashed in all your purses, that you worry about how much you’re bleeding, and, typically, that you suffer from cramps. What you may not know is that it can also cause an iron deficiency, which can cause iron-deficiency anemia, the symptoms of which include fatigue, mental fogginess, and mood swings. This drink boosts iron levels with broccoli (which also has vitamin C, helping your body absorb the iron) and kale, which has more iron than beef.

Juicing Recipe for Iron Deficiency: Iron Plus

1 beet with top
2 kale leaves
1 cup broccoli florets with stems
2 carrots
1 apple, cut into wedges

Alternate feeding the ingredients into the juicer.


Personally, I feel there’s nothing worse than stomach troubles on top of being on my period because it ends up making my entire torso feel bloated. Luckily, there are a number of things that can be consumed to help IBS. Carminatives are herbs (or a preparation of herbs) that combat gas, both by preventing its formation and facilitating in its elimination. Antispasmodics are also used to treat irritable bowel syndrome no matter when it strikes and eases cramping as well. And guess what? The first three ingredients—ginger, mints, and fennel—are all both carminatives as well as antispasmodics. Also, apples are high in fiber, aiding digestion.

Juicing Recipe for IBS: Tummy Tonic

1/2-inch slice of ginger
Handful of fresh peppermint or spearmint
1/2 small fennel
1 apple, cut into wedges

Wrap the ginger in the peppermint and feed it through the juicer, followed by the fennel and apple.
