STRESSED OUT? TRY COLORING YOUR WAY TO CALM.
I knew I’d like adult coloring books. I’ve always loved coloring. What I didn’t expect is how effective they are as stress relief.
Let’s take yesterday as an example. It was one of those days. You know the kind: hectic and long, a day that leaves you frazzled and exhausted. When I got home, I just wanted to crawl under the covers. But I decided to color instead.
I put on some quiet music and chose a coloring book off my shelf (I got several as gifts over the holidays – maybe you did, too?). I spread my markers across the table and opened to the mandala I’d been coloring last. Already, I could feel my breathing slow. I picked up a ruby red marker and began to color the tiny shapes.
Coloring reminds me of yoga. Or knitting. Or meditating. I feel my whole body slow down and relax. My mind gets quiet. That free-floating anxiety settles down a little. I get lost in the repetitive motion of coloring shape after shape.
Sometimes I color for just 10-15 minutes, sometimes for hours. Each time, I feel less stressed when I’m done.
But don’t just take my word for it. A groundbreaking study in 2005 proved coloring mandalas reduced anxiety levels in adults.
And there are so many cool adult coloring books to choose from these days! Whatever you’re passionate about, there’s a coloring book for you: flowers, Buddhist mandalas, Celtic mandalas, hot dudes, Doctor Who, Outlander, Game of Thrones, Paris street style, cats in Paris … there are literally hundreds of adult coloring books to choose from. There are even some pocket editions, so you can take your creative stress relief with you wherever you go.
If you’re already a fan, you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t tried it, we invite you to … if not for the creativity of it, then for the stress relief!
