Whether you live in a small apartment or a big house, it can be a challenge to make a home office work.
When faced with any small space predicament, we often turn to the brilliant minds at Apartment Therapy, who help us understand what makes a room great.
Today, we’re sharing their tips on how to create a smart home workspace. Apartment Therapy’s Big Book of Small Cool Spaces offers up five smart home work spaces to delight and inspire. Regardless of which office you prefer (we personally love the corner office), make sure you allow yourself a space dedicated to your craft!
GENERAL TIPS FOR CREATING A SIMPLE, SMART HOME OFFICE (OR CRAFT SPACE!)
GO WIRELESS. Eliminating electrical cords (or at least hiding them from view) is the single fastest and most dramatic improvement you can make in an office space.
DESIGN AROUND THE DESKTOP. Traditional desk units rarely maximize the uniquely shaped and sized areas in home offices. Start with an unattached desktop, then fill the space beneath it with rolling file cabinets and bins in the combination that best suits your needs. I’ve seen people custom-cut doors, kitchen countertops, and plywood to fit their funky small spaces to great effect, and with a custom piece that goes wall to wall, you’ll get far more usable surface area and a clean, uncluttered look.
CHOOSE A QUALITY CHAIR. If you work at home, it probably requires sitting, and often for long stretches of time. The right chair is crucial not only for your comfort but also for supporting healthy posture and contributing to better health. Adequate lumbar support and adjustable seat height are two important criteria.
