Years ago, I met with an Ayurvedic doctor who told me that if I were going to make one change, it should be this: every morning, right after I wake, drink a tall glass of filtered water with lemon juice.
She explained that it would balance my pH (lemons themselves are acidic but turn alkaline in our bodies); clear my skin; aid in digestion; act as a gentle diuretic, and hydrate my lymph system.
I’ve been drinking lemon water every morning for over a year. Sometimes I warm the water so it’s like a tea, sometimes I drink it cold.
I have to say, it helps. It’s become an easy habit, the way I start my day. I drink lemon water before I have my coffee (which I’m trying to give up – that’s another story), and I feel lighter, fresher.
It’s a little mini-cleanse every morning.
So … if – like me – you had a I-dug-into-my-kid’s-candy-bag moment or I-couldn’t-resist-the-candy-aisle-in-the-grocery-store moment, don’t worry about it. You enjoyed some Halloween candy – that’s awesome!
But if you’re feeling slightly off from all that sugar, it’s easy to get back on track. Give yourself a mini-cleanse over the weekend with these three easy steps.
1. Drink lemon juice every morning. Squeeze half a fresh lemon into warm or cold distilled water. Drink it as soon as you wake up and wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else.
2. Eat plenty of protein. Lean protein satisfies, and gives your body the building blocks it needs to rebuild.
3. Eat healthy fats. Cook with coconut oil, eat a few avocados, stir up some eggs, snack on almonds, walnuts and pistachios.
